Coding (CAUTI):
Important notes:
- The term catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is not recognised in ICD-
10-AM, ICD-10 or ICD-11.
- The relationship between the placement and care of an indwelling catheter (IDC) and
the development of a urinary tract infection is not always clear.
- CAUTI surveillance programs track incidence and support better catheter practices, but
their definitions differ from clinical diagnoses.
- Clinical advice confirmed that the terminology catheter-associated urinary tract
infection (CAUTI) or urinary tract infection post insertion of an IDC, on their own, are
insufficient to assume a causal relationship.
- Further evidence in the documentation or
clinical confirmation would be required to assign CAUTI as a complication of the
indwelling catheter. (Refer to ACS 1904)
Therefore, for CAUTI without further specification, assign:
N39.0 Urinary tract infection, site not specified
Also assign
Z96.0 Presence of urogenital implants.
